UBC Invited to Present at the International Maritime Organization's Workshop on Underwater Radiated Noise and Energy Efficiency

The University of British Columbia (UBC) has been formally invited by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a specialized agency of the United Nations, to present at the upcoming Second Workshop on the Relationship Between Vessel Energy Efficiency and Underwater Radiated Noise, to be held on November 6–7, 2025, at the IMO Headquarters in London.

UBC’s presentation, titled “An Adaptive Physics-Based Machine Learning Framework for Underwater Noise Analysis,” will be led by Pacific Rim Initiative for Sustainable Marine Systems (PRISMS) Cluster Co-Lead Dr. Rajeev Jaiman, in collaboration with Dr. Jasmin Jelovica and Mr. Ishan Neogi from the Computational Multiphysics Laboratory. The presentation will showcase UBC’s Marine Digital Twin framework, which connects quiet-by-design ship optimization (HARP project) with real-time noise-aware routing and speed control (MELO project) to mitigate noise impacts on marine mammals without compromising energy efficiency.

The workshop, chaired by the IMO Secretariat and supported by Transport Canada, will bring together leading international experts from academia, classification societies, ports, shipyards, and regulatory agencies to advance the IMO’s Action Plan for the Reduction of Underwater Noise from Commercial Shipping. UBC’s contribution represents a significant recognition of PRISMS’s leadership in sustainable marine technologies and its integration of AI, digital twins, and ocean sustainability research at the global policy level.
